Fitness is always evolving, and so is Fitness 2000! Our Beach St. location has just added a brand-new machine to its line-up: the Maxicam Glute Blaster! If you’ve been at another gym, you may know this machine as a leg press. It provides an amazing exercise for the glutes (the gluteus maximus muscles— also known as your buttocks!).

Here’s the basic idea:
<img src="http://www.fit2k.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/gluteblaster-224x300.jpg" alt="" title="Glute Blaster"height="260" align="right" style="margin-left:10px;" />
Place the weight pin at an appropriate level (if you’re not sure, start with the highest/lightest setting). Stand facing the handles. Rest your knees on the lowest bench and adjust the chest pad so that you can lean on it.

Put one foot on the foot pad, making contact with the entire heel. Slowly push your leg back without moving the upper half of your body, keeping your foot flat on the pad. Hold this position for a second or two, then slowly return your leg to its original position.

If you’ve got the weight at the right setting, you should be able to do 12 reps per leg to complete this glutes workout…and you should feel the stretch by the end of it! A few sets of per week and you’ll start seeing results around the rear in no time.

by Roberta Wyatt

When you’re in your 20′s, it’s easier to control your weight. And some people are blessed with a faster metabolism than others, allowing them to indulge and get away with it. But as we move into our 30′s and beyond, our body fat will begin to increase unless we take steps to control it. Why does it get harder to lose body fat as we get older? Lifestyle changes play a role as we enter our working years and start a family, but physiology works against us as well.

The 3 Factors are:

1. Growth Hormone levels drop – GH levels are highest during puberty, then slowly decline as we age. GH is anabolic for building lean body mass, but it also promotes fat loss, so it’s harder to lose fat as the GH level decreases.

2. Muscle Mass declines – We begin to lose muscle mass at a rate of about 1% per year starting in our early 40′s and it accelerates after the age of 50. Muscle is more metabolically active than fat, which leads to a drop in metabolism. This is why our calorie requirements decrease as we get older, but some of us don’t adjust what we eat.

3. Insulin Sensitivity decreases – As we age, insulin sensitivity decreases. When this happens, the pancreas produces more insulin to push glucose into cells. Insulin promotes fat storage, so higher levels of insulin increase body fat, especially around the waist and tummy.

What to do?
We can’t stop the aging process, but there’s a lot we can do to prevent weight gain as we get older. High-intensity interval training, like our RIPPED classes, is a good way to boost your calorie burn. Resistance training, like our Sculpt classes, is a must for preventing weight gain with age. Not only will you become stronger, but you will increase your metabolically active lean body mass. Reducing your calorie intake is important as well, but don’t cut out lean protein sources; that will help preserve muscle mass. And finally, get enough sleep. Letting the body recover is as important as working it out!

What is Zumba?

“Zumba is Fitness in disguise!” -Zumba Instructor Mandy R.

“Zumba is the worlds most popular fitness dance format! Zumba is an awesome class for all fitness levels that we are proud to offer at Fitness 2000. We suggest trying at least three Zumba classes with different instructors to experience the variety and styles available.” -Fitness Director Ember N.

What do I wear to Zumba?

“Anything comfortable and cool. Just REMEMBER, if your shoes looks like a tire on the bottom do not wear them in class. You take the chance of injury to your knees, since you will be doing a lot of moves “side to side.” -Catalina S

What can I expect when I come to Zumba?

“Zumba is a fun filled class that makes you feel like your at a party!” -Zumba Instructor Mandy R.

“Be prepared to sweat learn new moves and have fun.” -Zumba Instructor Catalina S

What if I’m not coordinated and I can’t dance!

“It is not a problem. Just hang in there, because you already took your first step toward a healthier, better lifestyle – you started out with a fun, rewarding class. Be proud of yourself!” -Catalina Salas

“If you don’t get it the first time try again. Most instructors repeat the same routines for several weeks and once you learn the basic moves it gets easier. Have patience and ask the instructor to go over any moves you need help with after class is over. Everyone remembers their first Zumba class!” -Zumba Instructor Kat Cambell

What if I’m out of shape?

“In Zumba we use a lot of repetition steps. After a few classes you will know the basic steps. Just enjoy the music.” -Catalina Salas

“Zumba can be modified to fit everyone’s needs. Your instructor will be more than willing to help you with this. Also, set a personal goal to get through 20 minutes the first couple weeks then bump it up to 30. Continue to kick it up a little every few weeks and before you know it an hour will have flown by. If you like the music and enjoy the moves stick with it and have patience. ” -Kat Cambell

What kind of people are in your Zumba classes?

“Everyone who loves dance and wants to get fit while having fun!” -Catalina Salas

How will Zumba benefit me?

“Zumba tones muscles, increases cardiovascular system, encourages and maintains flexible joints, improves balance and posture, burns calories, improves bone density and even detoxifies cells when you sweat also you will relieve stress, improves your mood. Why? Because participating in a Zumba class releases endorphins, changing your depressed mood from sad to happy.you will laugh at your mistakes, and learn that you don’t have to be perfect.” -Catalina Salas

“Once you try you will love it and become addicted! Zumba should be a time for you to relax, sing, and dance you’re way to a fitter you! You will sweat, achieve your goals, and won’t even realize it because you will have fun doing it!” -Zumba Instructor Mandy R.

How many calories can I burn during a Zumba Class?

“It depends on your body type, body composition, and intensity that you use! One participant could burn 300 calories while another participant could burn between 500-1000 calories. ” -Catalina Salas

by Roberta Wyatt

Ever wondered why some men can down a whole pizza, while women have to scrutinize every calorie they eat? One reason men can eat more and not gain weight is their relative size and higher muscle-to-fat ratio than women. But there are other reasons too.

1. Hormones- Estrogen makes it harder for women to burn body fat after a meal; younger women store the excess around their hips and thighs, while older women tend to store it around their abdominal region. Women also experience hormonal fluctuations during their monthly cycles that trigger carb cravings.

2. Fat Cell Size- Women’s fat cells are larger in size and they contain more fat-storing enzymes than fat-burning enzymes.

3. Testosterone- Men produce ten times more estrogen than women. Testosterone helps inhibit fat storage and boost lean body mass.

So, what to do? Do resistance training. It helps boost the amount of metabolically active muscle tissue we have, which increases calorie burn. Eating a diet that’s low in (or free of) processed foods and hormone-free foods and high in fresh fruits and veggies is a healthy lifestyle change and will certainly help you feel better!
