FitKids2K will offer fun and innovative program for kids between the ages of 6 to 13 that build self-esteem and stronger bodies. Our mission is to empower the youth of today and tomorrow, by teaching them the life-long benefits of staying fit, eating right and living a healthy lifestyle.

There are various types of child specific programs that Our Fitness Director Lindsey Crowe has developed is a combination of getting the kids used to an active lifestyle as well as honing some skills in them. This is done by exposing them to our circuit training, sports conditioning, awesome classes and activities. Involving your kids in group activities is very beneficial; we guarantee positive outcomes from these types of programs.

At FitKid2K, we know that childhood obesity rates are increasing at an alarming rate and physical fitness classes are decreasing in schools. Many concerned parents are turning to FitKid2K for help for their kids and teens.

These days it’s probably more common to find a remote control keyboard or video game controller in the hands of a child at play than a ball, glove or bike. Physical activity is so important during the formative years of a Childs life, it’s crucial to ensure that they’re getting the exercise their bodies need.

An important way to help your child with weight loss, maintaining a normal weight and develop healthy habits is to encourage him to participate in regular physical activity. One of the most important aspects that one needs to know is that kids and teens are sensitive and they need to be taken care of. An adult will be able to cope with the pressures of a fitness center, but the same cannot be said about children.

Concepts of kid’s health awareness is not enough, especially in this day and age where we see young kids becoming victims of obesity a lot more than any other time. This is where FitKid2k shows its strength by reinforcing a better outlook on children, starting with their health, building strong bodies, boosting self-confidence and self-respect.

FitKid2K fitness training, team sports and nutrition education work hand in hand with our healthy weight control program, which focuses on the achievements of realistic short-term goals for sustained weight management.

Brought to you by Lindsey Crowe Fitness director @ Fitness 2000

We are creatures of habit – not only psychologically and socially, but physiologically as well. If you need proof, all you have to do is read up on shift work disorder, which shows that simply changing one’s sleep and work schedule can have some profound consequences for our health.

With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that changing the time of day when one’s workout routine takes place is a huge deal for everything from mood to performance. Perhaps the most common adjustment that takes place is when someone decides to exercise in the morning. It may be because a long day at work is too exhausting to be 100% when you hit the gym after it’s over, or you may just not want to wait for equipment access in a crowded gym at 6PM. Or, it could be because a parent is super busy with kids’ after-school activities, so first thing in the morning before they wake up is the best bet for getting in a strength and conditioning program.
Whatever the reason, the adjustment to exercise in the morning is without a doubt the toughest “time change” one could make. With that in mind, here are five keys to making it a smooth transition:

1. Get to bed earlier.

This seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised at how many people complain that they can’t get results from exercise in the morning without realizing that they’re still going to be far too late at night.

If you’re someone who is accustomed to sleeping 12AM-8AM, then racing to be to work at 9AM, it’s going to be an adjustment if you want to start training at 6AM before you head to work. You’re only making it tougher if you decide that you’re simply going to sleep 12AM-5AM. It’s also going to crush your productivity for the rest of the day, as you’ll be sleep walking rather than enjoying the post-exercise energy boost most people experience. If you want to be up at 5AM or 6AM to train, you’ve got to be in bed by 10PM. In fact, I always tell my athletes that an hour of sleep before midnight is worth two hours after midnight.

2. Stand up for a bit.

Dr. Stuart McGill has made some fantastic observations on spine stiffness first thing in the morning. In a nutshell, when we lay down to sleep at night, our spine is decompressed, so the intervertebral discs actually collect water. This increased hydration status builds annular tension within the discs, and makes the spine stiffer overall. This isn’t a good kind of stiffness, though; more stress is placed on the ligaments and discs than the soft tissue structures that typically protect them.

Simply standing upright and moving around decreases the hydration status of the discs – and, in the process, actually makes us shorter as the day goes on! While I don’t know of many people that want to get shorter, the good news is that this height reduction reduces the spine stiffness and allows us to move the spine more safely and effectively. While disc hydration diminishes over the course of the entire day, the majority of it occurs in the first hour that we’re awake.

3. Take a hot shower before exercise in the morning.

One of the biggest struggles a lot of folks encounter is getting warmed up in the morning. Folks usually turn the heat down at night while they’re asleep, and it’s obviously colder outside at nighttime. You might think I’m nuts, but hopping out of bed and into a hot shower is a great “body temperature transition” strategy that bridges the gap between bed and exercise. And, since you’ll be standing in the shower, it also helps to accomplish tip #2 from above!

It only has to be 25-30 seconds to get your body temperature up a bit, and then you can take your “real” shower after you sweat up a storm. As an alternative to shower #1, you can always splash some hot water on your face and drink a cup of coffee. There’s no way you’re getting out of shower #2, though, Smelly.

4. Extend the warm-up.

In line with points #2 and #3, it’s a good idea to add a few more dynamic warm-up drills to your pre-exercise routine. Typically, our athletes do between eight and ten drills, but those who exercise in the morning are better off with as many as 15. It might add five minutes to your dynamic warm-up, but that’s far better than spending far more than five minutes in physical therapy for an injury you got from insufficiently warming up!

In line with tip #2 from above, you likely want to focus on more standing variations in your mobility exercise selections.

5. Tinker with various nutrition approaches.

There are thousands of different nutritional strategies outlined for those who want to exercise in the morning, but the truth is, everyone is different. I have known folks who will throw up anything solid that they consume prior to exercise, and others (myself included) who could eat a giant breakfast and keep it down just fine. For most, I think sipping on a shake as you start the training session is a good place to start. If you handle that fine, you can consider having some solid food before the training session, if you find that you’re hungry in the middle of the training session.

6. Recruit a training partner.

A training partner is almost always a good idea, but this is especially true when you’re up at the crack of dawn and not necessarily in the mindset to really push yourself. Plus, when you’re awake for exercise before the sun rises, you’re far more likely to hit the snooze button if someone isn’t waiting for you at the gym.

While training first thing in the morning isn’t exactly ideal, it may be your only option for staying consistent with your workout routine – and consistency is the name of the game. Implement these strategies to get the most out of your early morning training session

Haley, along with 7 other qualifiers from around the state, played in the Austin area April 30 and May 1.

Haley has been playing tennis for 12 years and is a USTA 18 Superchamp in the state of Texas. Only 8 female 4A Varsity singles players from around the state qualify for the UIL state tourney in Austin and Haley, along with her teammate Will Adkisson, are the only two Birdville High School players in the history of the school to advance to the state tournament!

Haley is currently ranked 427 nationally and 35 in the state of Texas out of all junior level players; she hopes to play NCAA Division 1 tennis when she graduates in 2013.

Birdville High School sent her and her teammate Will Adkisson, who advanced in the Varsity Male division, today with a rally at the courts – just down the road from the NRH location of Fitness 2000!

If you enjoy moving and shaking your hips to a Latin beat, you’ll love this dance workout. Zumba® is one of our most popular classes and there’s no confusion as to why – it’s a workout in disguise!

Alberto “Beto” Perez created Zumba® by accident one day when he used his own music consisting of salsa and merengue to teach an aerobic class in 2011. As the class went on, Perez started using “dance-fitness” moves inspired by the music. Zumba® has been a hit since!

“Since its inception in 2001, the Zumba program has grown to become the world’s largest – and most successful – dance-fitness program, with more than 12 million people of all shapes, sizes and ages taking weekly Zumba classes in over 110,000 locations across more than 125 countries.”

Fitness 2000 offers two classes: Zumba® and Zumba® Toning. Zumba® Toning adds the toning stick to the basic moves to blast calories, bump up the energy, and sculpt arms, abs and thighs.

If you haven’t tried Zumba® before, don’t be afraid! “Zumba can be modified to fit everyone’s needs. Your instructor will be more than willing to help you with this. Also, set a personal goal to get through 20 minutes the first couple weeks then bump it up to 30. Continue to kick it up a little every few weeks and before you know it an hour will have flown by. If you like the music and enjoy the moves stick with it and have patience. ” – Instructor Kat Cambell

If you already love Zumba® or want to try it for the first time, come to our Cinco de Mayo Zumba Party, this Saturday, May 5 (Cinco de Mayo!) from 9-10am at the North Richland Hills location.

Instructor Name: Brooke Knight
Class: Pilates
Favorite Food: Sushi
My class in one word: Awakening

Most of our class offerings are self-explanatory: they’re either branded workouts like Zumba, Flirty Girl Fitness, and TurboKick, or they’re workout styles everyone’s familiar with, like yoga and kickboxing.

In contrast, pilates are not as well-understood by the general public! Many people have heard the word but aren’t really familiar with what pilates is. Over four million people ask Google “what are pilates?” every month! While the classes are very popular, we wanted to make sure that all our members know about pilates so that they can join the class if it interests them. (Click here for our class schedule to see if there’s a pilates class that’s convenient for you!)

What Is Pilates?
Pilates is a body conditioning system developed by a German man named Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s. Joseph worked with many students, mostly dancers, to develop the program, which spread quickly due to its effectiveness.

What Does Pilates Do?
True to its history with dancers, pilates increases flexibility, strength, and endurance in the muscles. The method is designed to help you control your movement by building a strong core, from which the rest of your muscles gain strength. Our classes use primarily mat/floor exercises, although pilates can include the use of various devices (like those super-fun pilates exercise balls)!

Who Should Do Pilates?
Everyone can do pilates and will enjoy our classes and our excellent instructors! If you’re trying to decide between other classes though, pilates is a great tool for people with back or core problems as it’s often focused on correcting problems. In fact, many doctors recommend it for people who require physical therapy due to injuries or chronic pain!

What About Yoga?
People often associate yoga and pilates, and that makes a lot of sense: they can look very similar! However, they ARE different…and they can complement each other! They both will help you develop focus; pilates will boost your core (which will help you in yoga) and yoga will give you another big boost to flexibility (which will help you with pilates). Throw in some cardio like Zumba or Flirty Girl Fitness and you’ll be a weight-loss powerhouse!

Our Pilates classes are available at 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and at 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays at our Beach location. Click here to see our entire class schedule!
